Tax Assesment Forum

Prince George’s County Council Member Ingrid M. Turner (D) – District 4, will host a Tax Assessment Forum for the residents of Bowie on Thursday, August 5, 2010, 7:30 p.m., at Bowie City Hall Multi-Purpose Room, 2614 Kenhill Drive, Bowie, MD. 

 

The Tax Assessment Forum will feature a presentation by Tax Assessment Officer John Hensley and staff. Mr. Hensley will provide specific information to the Bowie residents regarding property tax reassessments, Homestead caps with regard to the assessments and the impact on future tax bills. Residents will have the opportunity to ask questions, express viewpoints, and share their concerns.

Notice of Funding Availability
Proposal Workshop

On Wednesday, August 18, 2010, the Department of Housing and Community Development of Prince George’s County, Maryland will host a Notice of Funding Availability (NOFA) Proposal Workshop.  This Proposal Workshop will provide an overview of entitlement federal funds received by Prince George’s County with its primary focus on the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program and the HOME Investment Partnerships Program (HOME) and will provide participants with specific requirements in applying for these funds.  In addition, Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) applications for Program Year 37, covering the period July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2012 will be available on that day with a submission deadline of Friday, September 17, 2010 at 5:00 p.m.

 

CDBG funding applications will also be available at the Department of Housing and Community Development located at 9400 Peppercorn Place, Suite 120, Largo, MD, 20774 and on the County’s website: www.co.pg.md.us/Government/AgencyIndex/HCD or by mail or email upon request. The workshop date and times are as follows:

Bowie Police Offer Self Defense Classes for Women

The Rape Aggression Defense System is a program of realistic self-defense tactics and techniques for women. The R.A.D. System is a comprehensive, women-only course that begins with awareness, prevention, risk reduction and risk avoidance, while progressing on to the basics of hands-on defense training. R.A.D is not a martial Arts program. Our courses are taught by nationally certified R.A.D. Instructors and provide each student with a workbook/reference manual. This manual outlines the entire Physical Defense Program for reference and continuous personal growth, and is the key to our free lifetime return and practice policy for R.A.D. graduates.

There are two upcoming series of classes: Saturday mornings (beginning 8/28) and Tuesday evenings 
(beginning 9/7) Classes are held once a week for 5 weeks. 

 

7th Annual Back to School Bash
in Bowie!

On August 21 from 10:00 am – 1:00 pm come participate in the 7th Annual back to School Bash.  Children’s games, entertainment, moon bounces, face painting demonstrations and more will be offered!  FREE School supplies for the first 350 children in attendance for student’s ages 4 through 10.  For more information call the Gym at 301-809-2383.  The Back to School Bash will be held at the City of Bowie Gymnasium, 4100 Northview Drive, Bowie, MD 20716

 

Speed Cameras In Use on Belair Drive and Northview Drive

During the week of June 7th, the Bowie Police Department will begin using speed cameras on Belair Drive in the school zone in the vicinity of the Belair Annex. Cameras will be in use Monday through Friday, from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.  For more information about the program, please read the press release below or visit the Police Department page on this website.

 

Mentors Needed for Teen Mentor Program

Volunteers, men and women, are needed for the City’s Bowie Prevention Network, Teen Mentoring Program. Volunteers spend one hour weekly, usually during lunch, with a student at Bowie High School. Through this program, students receive the support of a caring adult and the mentors receive the satisfaction of helping students build personal confidence and strategies to navigate the challenges of the teen years and success in high school. The Bowie Prevention Network and the Teen Mentoring Program have been helping teens at Bowie High School for more than eight years. The need for teens to experience and benefit from significant, positive adult relationships has never been greater. Sunday Sunset Concert Series

Enjoy a relaxing Sunday evening at Allen Pond Park listening to music.  FREE concerts are held at the Robert V. Setera Amphitheater from 7:00 pm - 8 p.m.  From country, to jazz, to rock and roll, there's a performance to meet every musical taste. Bring a blanket or lawn chair and enjoy the music! Keep Your Pet Safe with a Microchip

Microchips are a great way to return stray pets to their owners. Bowie Animal Control is partnering with a local veterinarian to provide low-cost microchips for pets that belong to City residents.  The cost to have the microchip implanted and to register your pet is only $15.  Visit the Animal Control Office Monday through Friday between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m. to purchase a microchip voucher. Then contact Highway Veterinary Hospital to schedule an appointment to have the chip implanted.

 

Changes and Upgrades for Allen Pond Park and Whitemarsh Park

After eight months of hard work and input from the community and staff, the City's consultant has finalized a Master Plan for Allen Pond Park. The plan proposes several significant changes to the park. The timetable for implementation of the plan will be set by the City Council. Work on a plan for Whitemarsh Park is also underway.  Updates on formulation of that plan may be viewed at www.cityofbowie.org/Parks/whitemarsh_masterplan.asp.

 

Greenbelt Labor Day Parade

Labor Day is approaching, and with it the annual Greenbelt Labor Day Parade. Fire trucks, bands, dance groups, and you can make a great parade for all of Greenbelt. The Parade will start at 10:00 am on Monday, September 6.  The Parade is a great opportunity to make the people of Greenbelt and the surrounding areas aware of community organizations and what they do.  We invite you or your organization to consider joining in the parade. Greenbelt Outstanding Citizen of
the Year

Every year the Greenbelt Outstanding Citizen of the Year Selection Committee chooses a volunteer to receive this honor at Greenbelt’s annual Labor Day Festival Opening Ceremony. Greenbelt strives to make this a memorable event for the honoree. State and local officials personally bestow congratulatory citations and proclamations on the Outstanding Citizen. In addition to receiving special gifts, the honoree’s name is added to a permanent plaque located in the Community Center, and the honoree serves as the Grand Marshal for the Labor Day Parade.

 

The City of Greenbelt needs your input to make this wonderful award a reality for Greenbelt’s most deserving person.  Describe in your own words those acts of exceptional kindness and tireless energy that your nominee has shown.  Such acts could include organizing a program for the benefit of our community, giving time and talent to teach, lending a helping hand to those in need, or just making the special effort to ensure that “good things happen” for others.

Family Fun Night

On August 13 from August 13 from 8:00 – 10:00 pm, admittance for the whole family will be only $3.00.  Bring your pool toys and your family for an evening of fun. Greenbelt Senior Center Updates

The Senior Game Room and Lounge are open to senior citizens, ages 60 and over, during regular operating hours. The Senior Nutrition Program serves hot lunches at 12:00pm Monday through Friday in the commercial kitchen at the Community Center.  Senior citizens must reserve a hot lunch at least two days in advance to ensure that enough meals are delivered. Monthly Movie

Enjoy popular movies at the Senior Center each month.  Movies begin at 1:00pm in the Senior Lounge on Tuesdays.  This months feature will be One True Thing  This 1998 drama stars Meryl Streep and Renee Zellweger. A tough New Yorker learns her mother has cancer, and moves back in with her parents to help out.

 

Community Empowerment & Awareness Day

On Saturday, August 28, 2010 from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 pm, come participate in Community Empowerment & Awareness Day at the Amistad St. Paul United Church of Christ. This effort is focused on empowering and supporting parents and their children with back-to-school and related needs in a fun environment that celebrates a sense of our Community.  We welcome you to join this effort.  Sponsors, vendors, crafters and exhibitors to are needed and welcome to participate. The grounds and multi-purpose facility will be available for organizations, groups and small businesses to share information and provide services that address the needs of parents and children in the following areas:

 

  • Health-care and direct social services for children and parents;
  • Opportunities for colleges and universities to share their degree and certificate programs;
  • Organizations interested in providing community service opportunities for students;
  • Public, non-profit and small business services that assist families in providing a safe home environment (e.g., fire and home safety, car-seat safety, pest control, etc.);
  • Public and private employers who have job opportunities available;
  • Food vendors who provide healthy food options to families; and
  • Community-based crafters and small business vendors.

MNCPPC historic sites, including College Park Aviation Museum, Dorsey Chapel (Glenn Dale), Darnall's Chance House Museum (Upper Marlboro), Marietta House Museum (Glenn Dale), Montpelier Mansion (Laurel), Riversdale House Museum (Riverdale Park), Seabrook Schoolhouse, and the Surratt House Museum (Clinton) offer plenty to see and learn for people of all ages. The National Endowment for the Arts has created the Blue Star Museums program which honors our active duty servicemen and women and their families by providing free museum admission to participating sites through Labor Day - September 6, 2010. The eight M-NCPPC facilities above will waive their normal admission fees for America's military families from all branches of the service, upon presentation of a military ID. Life in Circles

The collage of works by Annie King Phillips, is now on display at arts/Harmony Hall Regional Center through Saturday, August 7. Gallery hours are Monday-Thursday 10 am-9 pm, Friday and Saturday 10 am-4 pm. Of her work, Ms. King Phillips says, "Creativity is to the spirit as breathing is to the body. Telling my story through the art of collage is like breathing in and breathing out, sending messages of enduring fortitude, hope and love. My collages record a personal history of my people and of me growing up and living and working in Washington DC. The collages are images in my mind's eye that reach out to broaden our minds, expand our hearts and tap into our common humanity." This exhibition is FREE to visitors.  Council Member Turner was pleased to attend the National Association of Counties Leadership Institute where she was awarded with a certificate of completion for her graduation.

 

 

 

On Friday July 16, Council Member Turner surprised students at High Bridge Elementary and Heather Hills Elementary summer camps with a pizza party to congratulate them for their participation in the 2010 Baseball Essay contest sponsored by the Council Member.
