Dear
Friends,
Thanks
to so many of you for joining me at my Town Hall meeting on April 22nd
at Parkdale High School. I hope you found the information and
interaction with staff from a variety of agencies helpful. As
always, please do not hesitate to call my office with any questions
at 301-952-3060. A copy of my PowerPoint presentation is also
available on my website if you were not able to attend.
There
are several events this weekend, including Berwyn Heights Day and
West Lanham Hills Family Fun Day on May 1st as well as the Riverdale
Park Arts Festival on May 2nd. I hope you can join
me at these great community events.
Lastly,
many of you have seen the video of several County police officers
striking a University of Maryland student during the disturbance
following a Maryland-Duke basketball game. The actions of the
officers on the video were inexcusable and are - appropriately - under investigation by the Police
Department’s Internal Affairs Division, the State’s Attorney, and the
FBI. I have met with Chief Hylton about this disturbing
incident and know that he is taking it very seriously. We have
a County Police Department filled with dedicated, hard-working public
servants and we cannot tolerate the behavior shown in this incident
by a few officers. I also firmly believe that the University of
Maryland has failed to do its part to control the behavior of its students
(where the relatively few rowdy students
unfairly taint the reputation of the student body), to provide
alternative outlets for post-game events and to put in place stricter
disciplinary measures. The University expects the County and
City of College Park to bear the brunt of their students’ behavior
and to pay for policing of these unnecessary public
disturbances. It is beyond time for the University to step up
their efforts.
Take care and
please call my office with any questions or concerns.
