Dear
Friends,
Now
that the Primary Election is behind us, we largely know who our
elected officials will be for the next four years in Prince George’s
County. I am looking forward to working with our next County Executive, Rushern Baker, whom
I have known and worked with for many years. I believe he will
be responsive and attentive to the needs of our communities and will
be a great partner in my efforts to serve District 3. I am also
looking forward to working with the next County Council – in addition
to four members who will likely be coming back, we have five new
Council Members, several of whom I know very well.
I
want to also update you on several pieces of legislation. On
September 28th, the County Council approved my bill,
CB-40-2010, which increases the fines for pawn shops in violation of
the County code, prohibits pawn shops from accepting items that are
new, and prevents them from trading in gift cards from other
stores. In addition,
we passed my resolution to establish the
Youth and Gang Violence Prevention Steering Committee (CR-62-2010),
which will create a committee of stakeholders to implement
recommendations to help young people avoid gang involvement. In
particular, I am pleased that the Transportation, Housing, and
Environment Committee (THE) which I chair, sent a stormwater
management ordinance (CB-80-2010) to the Council for
consideration. The legislation establishes Prince George’s County as one of
the leaders on stormwater management and addresses many of the
concerns of both the environmental and development communities that
were raised during the initial review of the legislation.
I also know
that there have been some recent reports about friction between the County Executive
and County Council over the new 911 Call Center.
I want you to know that contrary to some reports, the Council is
taking up the measure to fund completion of this new Call Center and contrary to some
rhetoric; it was never the case that the Council would jeopardize the
completion of this much-needed public safety facility.
Take care and
please call my office with any questions or concerns. I look
forward to continuing to represent you for the next four years.
Thank you.
Eric Olson
Council Member, District 3
