Karen R. Toles (D-District 7) was elected to her first four-year term on the Prince George’s County Council in the 2010 General Election. Council Member Toles, represents the 7th Councilmanic District of Prince George’s County, which includes the constituent areas of Capitol Heights, District Heights, Hillcrest Heights, Marlow Heights, Seat Pleasant, Suitland, Temple Hills and portions of Forestville and Oxon Hill.

Prior to her election to the County Council, Council Member Toles worked as a political and legislative coordinator for AFSCME Council 67, where she lobbied state elected officials to create and support legislation to strengthen working class families in Prince George’s County and throughout Maryland. She also represented AFSCME on the Health Care for America Now (HCAN) Committee, along with Congressional and U.S. Senate Representatives to support President Barack Obama’s Health Care Legislation. Council Member Toles was a member of President Obama’s Transition Team, where she served as Director for the Obama Administration’s National Day of Service Initiative for the State of Maryland. She was also Field Director for the Democratic National Committee, responsible for creating, training and directing the Presidential Campaign operations in Prince George’s County and Southern Maryland.

Educated in Prince George’s County Public Schools, Council Member Toles graduated from Forestville High School and the University of Maryland- College Park with a Bachelor of Science degree in Public Health. Additionally, she has completed advanced coursework towards a Masters degree in Public Administration from the University of Baltimore.

Prior to Council Member Toles election, she was appointed as a Trustee to the Prince George’s County Historical and Cultural Trust. She is an active member in the Iota Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and currently serves on the Board of Directors for the Ivy Community Charities of Prince George’s County, Inc.

Council Member Toles is the Chair of the Public Safety and Fiscal Management Committee (PSFM) and serves as Vice-Chair of the Planning, Zoning and Economic Development Committee (PZED) and is also a member of the Transportation, Housing, and The Environment (THE). Her appointments include the Board of Directors with the Council of Governments (COG), National Association of County Officials (NACO)-Community and Economic Development Steering Committee, Maryland Association of County Officials (MACO)-Women’s Committee, Council Representative to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board and Council Representative to the Council Liaison to the Prince George’s County Health Department.

Council Member Toles resides in Suitland, Maryland.
