District 4 Showcase Events:

Youth Leadership Bowie

Council Member Ingrid M. Turner hosted Youth Leadership Bowie on March 11, 2008, providing high school students with an opportunity to further enhance their leadership potential.  During their visit, the Youth Leadership Bowie Participants attended a County Council session.  The students participated in a discussion regarding a bill that would change the age at which a child may withdraw from school.  The students also attended a discussion of the Sub Region 1 Masterplan.  Youth Leadership Bowie is a program that provides a glimpse into the world of business and government and is designed to expose young people to a variety of potential career opportunities.  The program is sponsored by the Greater Bowie Chamber of Commerce.

BIZ 2008

On March 1, 2008 Council Member Ingrid M. Turner in Partnership with the Prince George’s County Community Foundation hosted the inaugural BIZ 2008:  A Summit and Showcase for Young Entrepreneurs designed to showcase Prince George’s County high school and college student entrepreneurs at the Camelot of Upper Marlboro.  The event attracted 200 participants.  Students had an opportunity to win a total of $10,000.00 in scholarships. 23 year old President and Chief Academic Officer of Innovative Study Techniques, and author of Reallionaire and  Get Real, Get Rich, Dr. Farrah Gray, along with Riche’ L. Holmes, Esq.; and WPGC News Director and radio personality, Guy Lambert provided encouragement and insight to the young entrepreneurs.  Also, a number of noted business owners were on hand to conduct workshop sessions, as well as, mentoring for the summit attendees.

ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp

The ExxonMobil Bernard Harris Summer Science Camp is a free, academic program of the Harris Foundation that takes an active role in educating students entering grades 6,7 and 8 in the fall of 2008.  Science, technology, engineering and mathematics are critical to society for the 21st Century and beyond.  Preserving the future requires an investment into the youth of today.  This program is designed to give an opportunity to and support historically underserved and underrepresented students with limited opportunities.  To find out more about the camp, simply email info@theharrisfoundation.org

WSSC Welcomes Springtime

This spring WSSC offers a full array of fun and educational activities for all ages.

H20 Fest – Saturday, April 12, 2008 – Local elementary school students, staff from local government agencies, Boy Scouts and the Patuxent Riverkeeper will be on hand to help the public celebrate how thinking green can protect blue.  People of all ages can learn how to preserve and protect our water sources through a variety of demonstrations including:  Wetland on Wheels, Tours of T.H. Duckett Dam and other events.  This free event will be held near WSSC’s T. Howard Duckett Dam at 7400 Brooklyn Bridge Road in Laurel, MD. 

Waste Water Treatment Plant Tours- The Seneca and Damascus Waste Water Treatment Plants will be open for public tours from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm Saturday April 19, 2008.  For more information, dial 301-206-7900.

Prince George’s County Youth Employment Services

Summer Jobs Program 2008- for ages 15-21, sign up now through April 25, 2008.

Human Services Coalition of Prince George’s County

Monthly Membership Luncheon April 9, 2008 12:00 noon until 2:00 pm at the Prince George’s Community College Largo Campus Kent Hall, Room K262.  The lunch will feature guest speaker Mr. Justin Pollock, Associate Director of Training Services of the Maryland Association of Nonprofit Organizations.  Reserve your place with No lunch or pay at the door by fax at 301-925-4387.

National Harbor News

National Harbor is holding auditions for regional talent.  They need 175 performers for a holiday program.  Auditions will be held on the following dates:

Baltimore Gas and Electric Company Hosts Seniors Energy Assistance

Application Fair for Bowie Customers 

  Event will provide qualifying BGE customers 55 and older the opportunity to apply for grants

WHAT: BGE will host a Seniors Energy Assistance Application Fair at the Bowie Senior Center. This event, specifically for BGE Bowie customers ages 55 and over, provides another opportunity for eligible customers to apply for energy assistance grants. Additionally, seniors who have already received energy assistance during this program year may qualify for additional funds if they are in a crisis.

WHY: BGE has always been committed to helping customers meet their energy needs and the Company is responsive to the fact that rising energy prices are challenging for many customers. This event is one of several Senior Outreach Fairs hosted by BGE throughout its Central Maryland service territory. Help is available for qualifying customers seeking energy assistance, but customers should not wait until they are in crisis to apply for energy grants.

In addition, seniors applying for energy assistance should bring the following items with them for fast and efficient processing:

  • Proof of residence (rent book, lease, mortgage, etc.)
  • Social Security cards for all household members
  • For heating assistance, bring a BGE and/or oil bill

Eligible applicants must have an existing BGE account or be in the process of applying for a new account.  For more information or to pre-register, customers may call the Bowie Senior Center at 301-809-2300.
