Exploring Program

Explorers partnering with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to support the 5th Annual Crime Victims' Fund 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk held Saturday, April 19, 2008.The Office of Homeland Security is constantly in the community providing services, support and a variety of mechanisms to meet the needs of the community. The Office of Homeland Security is an integral part of the community and its members and personnel are a part of the fabric of the society in which it exists. As an entity, the Office of Homeland Security seeks to offer a program consistent with the aims and objectives of the Learning for Life organization, to prepare youth to successfully handle the complexities of today's society and to enhance their self-confidence, motivation, and self-worth.

  • Explorers partnering with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to support the 5th Annual Crime Victims' Fund 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk held Saturday, April 19, 2008.An Explorer is an individual involved in the Learning for Life Program, a career education program for young men and women who are 14 years old (and have completed the eighth grade) through 20 years old.
  • An Explorer is an individual involved in a process of preparing to successfully handle the complexities of today's society and to enhance their self-confidence, motivation, and self-worth. The Office of Homeland Security’s program is a career-based program that introduces the Explorer to a career in the Homeland Security and Emergency Management. Among other things it also helps youth develop social and life skills, assists in character development, and helps them formulate positive personal values.

An important element of Exploring is that the program encourages young people to fulfill personal development needs while working to meet the needs of others.

Our Exploring programs are based on five areas of emphasis:

  • Boost self-confidence and experience success at school and work

Life Skills

  • Develop physical and mental fitness
  • Experience positive social interaction

Citizenship

  • Encourage the skill and desire to help others

Character Education

  • Help make ethical choices
  • Fulfill one's responsibilities to society as a whole

Leadership Experience

  • Acquire leadership skills necessary to fulfill one's responsibilities in society
  • Develop a variety of leadership traits

Young adults involved in Exploring will:

  • Gain practical knowledge of and experience in a career
  • Engage in a program of activities centered on career opportunities, life skills, citizenship, character development, and leadership experience to encourage the development of the whole person
  • Have opportunities to take on leadership roles
  • Have a chance to learn and grow in a supportive, caring, and enjoyable environment

TEEN CERT

Explorers partnering with the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) to support the 5th Annual Crime Victims' Fund 5K Run / 1 Mile Walk held Saturday, April 19, 2008The core Teen CERT program has three main goals. First, it will seek to provide students with a knowledge base on the effects of natural and man-made disasters and their emotional, social, and economic impacts. Secondly, it will aim to build decision-making and problem solving skills and strategies to help students make informed decisions regarding readiness, response & recovery and mitigation efforts to reduce loss of life and property. Lastly, an integral part of the Teen CERT program will be to provide students with hands-on training using reality-driven drills and exercises.
