Medical Reserve Corps, A National Program of Service

Medical Reserve Corps (MRC) is a national program with a local community-based emphasis. MRC is a component of Citizens Corps, one of the President's USA Freedom Corps, which promotes volunteerism and service throughout the U.S. and abroad. The Prince George's County Health Department recently became certified as a Medical Reserve Corps site in January 2005. We are one of 7 units in the state of Maryland and a total of 792 units in the United States.

Citizen volunteers are being recruited throughout Prince George’s County. The Prince George’s County Health Department Medical Reserve Corps Unit augments the Health Department’s Emergency Preparedness Plan. Medical Reserve Corps volunteers will report to work in the event of a public health emergency, natural disaster, terrorist attack, as well as during times of community need. The Prince George’s County Health Department will train and coordinate Medical Reserve Corps volunteers to assist the Health Department in responding to public health emergencies.

How Can Local Citizens Assist the Health Department in Times of Need?

Should a public health disaster occur, the MRC volunteers will be called to action by the State or the County Health Officer to assist with the set-up of dispensing sites and the distribution of medication. All levels of volunteers are being recruited both medical and non-medical to perform a variety of services, such as:

- client greeters - clerical assistants
- language translators - site assistants
- nurses - physicians
- pharmacists - mental health workers
- clinical social workers - computer technicians

The Health Department’s immediate goal is to recruit 1000 volunteers. We currently have 250 volunteers registered with Medical Reserve Corps.
