Summary: the purpose of this program is to support projects that address pressing issues in communities located near Alcoa facilities. Projects supported through this program should address at least one of the following areas of excellence:

Allen Foundation

Summary: Grants are limited under the terms of the foundation’s charter to projects that primarily benefit programs for human nutrition in the areas of health, education, training, and research.

  1. To make grants to fund relevant nutritional research
  2. To support programs for the education and training of mothers during pregnancy and after the birth of their children, so that good nutritional habits can be formed at an early age.
  3. To assist in the training of persons to work as educators and demonstrators of good nutritional practices.

Summary: The purpose of this program is to promote and enhance the growth of youth participation in baseball and softball throughout the world by funding programs, fields, coaches’ training, and the purchase of uniforms and equipment. Best Buy Children’s Foundation: Community Grants Program (Limited Eligibility) FY 2010

Summary: The purpose of this program is to support youth-oriented projects/programs that focus on education, life skills, leadership skills, and relationship development. Projects supported through this program should address pressing community needs and reach at-risk children.

Bluegrass in the Schools Mini-Grants – FY 2010

Summary: The purpose of this program is to foster in-school bluegrass music programs.  Funding can be used for live ensemble demonstrations that are accompanied by a brief overview of the history and pioneers of bluegrass music.  Although the funding agency appreciates music related to bluegrass, such as mountain music or early country, priority will be given to bluegrass music.

Build-A-Bear Workshop Foundation: Miscellaneous Grants – FY 2010

Summary: The purpose of this program is to support organizations that are committed to improving communities and impacting lives through philanthropy. Programs should provide direct services for children, families, and animals that are not easily categorized.

There are two types of grants that may be funded:

  • Individual projects grants: These are generally for one-time purchases or to fulfill a short-term need, such as the purchase of books, materials, or equipment.

CVS Caremark Community Grants (Select States) – FY 2010

Summary: The purpose of this program is to make a positive impact in the community by awarding funds to nonprofit organizations and public schools within states that have CVS pharmacies. This program will consider funding programs/projects that address one of the following:

  • Children with Disabilities
    • Proposals should demonstrate a goal of promoting independence among children with disabilities through assistive technology, and physical, occupational, speech, hearing and recreational therapies.
  • Public Schools
    • The public schools focus is meant to promote the inclusion of children with disabilities in student activities and extracurricular programs. Proposed programs must include children with disabilities as full participants in an early childhood, adolescent, or teenage program alongside their typically developing peers.
  • Health Care for the Uninsured
    • The goal of this focus is to ensure that more uninsured people receive high quality medical care by providers who participate in accountable community health care programs.

Organizations that are awarded funds are expected to post volunteer opportunities on the funding agency’s website so that local associates can participate in volunteer projects.

The Fender Music Foundation Grants – FY 2010

Summary: The purpose of this program is to provide support to nonprofit and governmental organizations with ongoing music instruction programs. Eligible programs are ones that provide music lesson opportunities to individuals who are not able to obtain such opportunities on their own.

GE Healthcare – Grants for Youth Education, Healthy Lives, and Diversity and Service (National)

Summary: Grants fund programs focused on youth education, healthy lives, and diversity and service. In the area of youth education, GE Healthcare is interested in proposals that address underserved communities with low graduation rates; support core competencies (such as math, science, reading, and writing); focus on arts in education; and support early childhood development programs. Healthy lives proposals should address childhood obesity, cardiac care, oncology (such as general and specific cancers), neurology (such as stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease), women’s health care, diabetes, or other health-related issues that address a need for increased awareness and/or community outreach. In the area of diversity and service, GE supports programs that impact minority populations or address local community issues, such as poverty, homelessness, the disadvantaged, food programs, and training.

The Harry and Jeanette Weinberg Foundation, Inc. - Maryland Small Grants Program–FY 2010

Summary: The Foundation initiated the Maryland Small Grants Program (MSGP) on December 1, 2007, to help eligible nonprofits more easily and efficiently apply for a grant. The MSGP supports nonprofits seeking general operating support, program support, or certain capital requests of up to $50,000 a year for up to two years, or a total maximum grant of $100,000. All that is required is a simple, five page proposal. In most cases it takes only 50 days to go from “Our application is enclosed” to "Your check is in the mail."

The response to the MSGP has been overwhelming. The Foundation is pleased to announce that since the establishment of the Maryland Small Grants Program, $10,463,450 has been awarded to 181 nonprofit organizations across the state.

Funding: The maximum award available under the Maryland Small Grants Program is $50,000 per year for up to two years or a total maximum grant of $100,000. However, most grants awarded are between $10,000 and $25,000 a year.

Eligibility: To participate in the Maryland Small Grants Program, an applicant must:

  • Be a nonprofit organization with 501(c )(3) status.
  • Be headquartered in the State of Maryland or provide direct service primarily to residents of the State of Maryland.
  • Be an operating nonprofit for a minimum of three years.
  • Meet the Weinberg Foundation’s mission of providing direct services to poor and vulnerable populations.
  • Request funds for general operating support, program support, or capital projects that address home repair, modifications, or improvement of a structure.
  • Maintain an organizational budget of less than $5 million.
  • Submit requests that represent no more than 25% of an organization’s total annual operating budget.

Wal-Mart and Sam’s Club Giving Program –FY 2010

Summary:  The purpose of this program is to improve the communities in which Walmart customers and associates live and work.  The foundation has particular interest in supporting veterans and military families, traditionally underserved groups, individuals with disabilities, and people impacted by natural disasters.

Funding:  An unspecified amount of funding is available to support awards of at least $250.  Award maximums are determined by the facility receiving the application.  Applicants should contact their local Walmart Store or Sam’s Club, using the information in the Contact section for their local award maximum.

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants are:

  1. Nonprofit organizations
  2. Public academic institutions and districts
  3. Private 501(c )(3) academic institutions
  4. 501(c )(3) faith-based organizations

Washington Area Women’s Foundation: Leadership Awards (Limited Eligibility) – FY 2010

Summary:  The purpose of this program is to recognize and reward outstanding local nonprofit organizations that are serving the critical needs of women and girls in under-resourced, oppressed, or marginalized communities.  Projects should include innovative work that focuses on topical issues related to gender, race, class, sexual orientation, and ability.

Funding:  Approximately $105,000 is available to support awards through this program.  Ten applicants will receive a $10,000 award.  An additional $5,000 will be awarded to one of these organizations using an online voting process.

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants are 501 (c )(3) nonprofit organizations based in Washington, D.C., northern Virginia (city of Alexandria, and Arlington and Fairfax counties), and Maryland (Montgomery and Prince George’s counties).  Applicants should primarily serve women and/or girls in the areas of health and/or safety.  Applicants must have a board of directors in place and have been in operation for at least two years.  Applicants must not have an annual program budget of more than $300,000, or an annual organizational budget of more than $2 million.

Women Helping Others (WHO) Foundation Literacy/Education Grants – FY2010

Summary:  The purpose of this program is to support free after school organizations and to support the implementation or expansion of literacy programs for  low-income children of all ages in the United States and Puerto Rico.  In order to qualify, an organization must have been incorporated for a minimum of three years prior to application.

Funding:  An unspecified amount of funding is available to support awards of up to $5,000 through this program.

Eligibility:  Eligible applicants are 501(c )(3) organizations that have been incorporated for a minimum of three years prior to application.  Preference will be given to organizations that meet the following criteria:

-    Total organization budget of $3 million or less

  1. All government funding less than 30 percent of income
  2. United Way funding less than 30 percent of income.

Deadline:  Application must be received by 5:00 p.m. CT on March 9, 2010.
