Preliminary Flood Insurance Rate Map for Prince George’s County and Incorporated Areas
As one of nearly 20,000 communities across the country, Prince George's County participates in the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). A major component of this program is Flood Hazard Mapping. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) issues and maintains Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRM), which are the official maps showing flood hazard areas in communities. These maps are utilized as the basis for local floodplain management regulations and mitigation efforts, to assess flood risk, and to determine if flood insurance is required for structure(s) on a property. Portions of the FIRM for Prince George’s County have been effective since June 18, 1987.
On September 30, 2010, FEMA released copies of a preliminary updated Flood Insurance Study (FIS) and FIRM for Prince George's County, Maryland and Incorporated Areas. This map reflects proposed updates to the information shown on the effective FIRM for Prince George's County and incorporated areas. Updated map features include, but are not limited to: 1-percent-annual-chance (formerly 100-year) flood elevations; floodplain and floodway boundaries; flood zone designations; street names and locations; bridge and culvert locations and stream names. In addition, the preliminary FIRM has been prepared in a digital and countywide format (i.e. the City of Laurel, Maryland has been incorporated in the FIRM). The new FIRM is commonly referred to as a countywide Digital Flood Insurance Rate Map (DFIRM).
