Air quality and climate change has become a predominant regional, national and global issue of challenge of our generation. Prince George’s County recognizes the importance and implications of climate change and adverse air quality. A number of resolutions and Executive Orders have been issued to highlight and begin to address these concerns:
County Council Resolution No. CR-10-1999 passed in 1999 in which Prince George's County Government pledged to join with jurisdictions from all over the world in the “Cities for Climate Protection Campaign”. By this Resolution, the County pledged to take a leadership role to reduce both greenhouse gas and air pollution emissions.
September 2007, Prince George's County Government launches the Green Building Initiative. The goals of the initiative are:
Reduce energy consumption in all County buildings by 20% by the year 2015;
Design and construct all new County buildings and public schools in accordance with the LEED Silver rating system;
Establish incentives for both new and existing private commercial buildings to achieve a LEED Silver rating;
Increase wind power 10% yearly for five years; and
Initiate Fleet/Vehicle Management Program, including hybrid buses, vehicles and emissions controls.
April 2008, the Prince George’s County Council adopted emission reduction targets to reduce County geographical emissions to 80% below 2008 levels by 2050. Mid- and long-term goals include stopping emission increases by 2010 and achieving a 10% reduction every five years thereafter through 2050.
County’s Air Quality Goals:
Increase County employee awareness of and participation in air quality improvements;
Improve public awareness of and participation in air quality improvements;
Increase business community awareness of and participation in air quality improvements;
Increase County school awareness of and participation in air quality improvements; and
Promote County municipal awareness of and participation in air quality improvements.
