The peer counseling program was
developed in 2004 by the Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) of the USDA in
an attempt to augment WIC’s efforts to help women initiate and continue
WIC breastfeeding peer counselors provide a valuable
service to their communities, addressing the barriers to breastfeeding
by offering breastfeeding education, support, and role modeling. Peer
counselors are generally employees of the WIC Program dedicated to
breastfeeding information sharing and support.
